System of Academic rank

There are some differences in the systems of academic rank between Norway and other countries, so this is a description of the Norwegian system.

Norway

Elected faculty positions:

  • Rektor (Rector; one per university; usually assisted by prorektor and/or viserektor)
  • Dekan (Dean; one per faculty; formerly Dekanus (males) and Dekana (females), sometimes assisted by a prodekan)

Professorial ranks:

  • Professor
  • Dosent (Reader; rarely used in universities, somewhat more common in professional colleges)

Postdoctoral ranks:

  • Førsteamanuensis (Associate professor)
  • Førstelektor (Senior lecturer; lecturer who holds a doctorate - but without a formal PhD degree. In order to get the rank, a lecturer has to place all relevant work done after obtaining the Master degree before a commission consisting of two Førsteamanuenser (associate professors) and lead by a Professor. If the commission decides that the work submitted is consistent with PhD work, the rank of Senior Lecturer is granted. Is equal to Førsteamanuensis/ Associate professor)
  • Postdoc (senior research fellow; postdoctoral fellow)

Postgraduate ranks:

  • Amanuensis (assistant professor; rarely used in universities, somewhat more common in professional colleges)
  • Universitetslektor / Høgskolelektor (lecturer)
  • Stipendiat (research fellow; PhD-student)
  • vitenskapelig assistent (research assistant; usually a graduate student)
