It was one of these late summer evenings where the weather gives you an early taste of autumn, and the ugly fact that the lazy days of summer is almost at an end stares you right in your face. Outside the wind was howling and the old willow trees in my garden bowed as if in mourning of the departing summer. I was sitting in my favorite chair contemplating the mysteries of life and the singular taste of Single Malt. I felt almost at ease with my self and life as such. But one thing kept nagging me. Nigerian scammers. I had just received a curious letter in my electronic mailbox, and together with a recent article in the Financial Times and the illustrious web of Scam o Rama, it had set my thoughts in motion. Personally I have always enjoyed a good scam, as long it was directed towards someone who completely deserved it, like the evil and heartless rich. A good example of this was my recent involvement with the Duke of Albington and the countess of.....but no, I must not be indiscreet. The honor of a lady should always be treated seriously. Especially if her husband has a bad temper and a disturbingly taste for blood. Not to mention his anger at loosing a suitcase full of money. But I digress. Let me return to this nagging thought of Nigerian scammers. And to a person called Tom Bin. To make a long story short (to late?) I took the letter from this Mr. Bin and set out to trick him into giving me a real picture of himself. Why, you ask? Because I was bored, and eager to find a cause exciting enough to involve myself in. Boredom is something to be avoided at all costs, especially when the autumn is looming on the horizon. And, as those of you who still remember me probably know, I never was very good at resisting exciting causes.
CAST OF CHARACTERS:
Tom and Juliet
Bin - Absolutely NOT orphans living in the Ivory Coast, but notoriously 419
scammers.
Mr.Rene Mulai - Most certainly NOT the Director General/International Remittance
Section of the Bank Of Africa
Mr. Charles Tucker - Who does NOT exists, and lives in Canada (Ontario region)
Kenneth Tucker - The son of the non-existing Charles Tucker, sergeant in the
101st Airborne (US). Dead.
SPECIAL GUEST APPARENCE:
Solomon C. Daniels - Notorious Nigerian scammer. Tries to get a piece of the
cake*
Mallam Musa - Also notorious Nigerian scammer. Cooperates with Daniels*
Mariam Fatima Abacha - Also notorious Nigerian scammer. Cooperates with Daniels*
Simon Templar (My self) - Working together with Daniels, Musa and Abacha ....
or so it seems.
*
Real scammers
The use of these existing scammers are due to them having had the sad misfortune to get involved with me in one way or the other. I took the liberty of using Mr. Daniels soccer-adress since that seems to be his current address, and no infringement on the rights of Mr. Kerr is intended. And just to digress once more: The illustrious Mrs. Abacha sent me these words in response to me ticking "her" of for a rather bad performance in convincing me of her desperate situation:

Dear Simon
Templer,
Thanks for that wonderful lesson. We never knew so much talent could be found
in you. I have never seen anything like this before. I am really proud of you.
Well, despit our lack of good command of English even the professors of English
still fall for the same scam. What do you have to say for that? Your "i
too know" is your problem. You do not need to be a professor of English
to get what you want?

Dear Sir,
Thank you very much for your letter. I am sorry I was so late in responding
but I have been on vacation. I am puzzled but also honored to have such a proposal
given to me. I will assist in any way I can, so please send further instructions.
I recently sold my computer company to Texas Instruments, so this is just the
kind of opportunity I have been looking for. I am now almost 50 years, and even
if I made good money with my small firm I am not that experienced with bigger
business matters, so please feel free to guide me.

Dear Tom,
It was with great
joy I read your prompt answer this afternoon. Do you know I had a son your age?
Unfortunately he was killed recently in Iraq. He had just received his sergeant’s
stripes and was so proud! You should have seen him. He served with the 101st
Airborne and I will never forget the day he received his parachutist wings.
I travelled from Ontario down to Fort Campbell (I am divorced and my son stayed
with his mother). He was a sight to behold! You are a student I see, Tom. My
son, his name is Kenneth by the way, was never very good with books. But in
the army he really found his place. Oh. I see I still write "is" about
him. Now it is "was" in every thing connected with him. Ah, well.
Sorry Tom I am rambling along and you are waiting for more sensible words than
this. Forgive an old man for writing to much nonsense. I enclose my picture,
taken in 2002. [A phony picture is attached]
I use the Bank of Montreal, 144 Wellington Street , Ottawa, ON K1P 5T3
Should I contact my lawyer or can we arrange everything on our own? What would
you prefer?
Sincerely yours
Charles
I was astounded, to say the least, to suddenly being called "Daddy"
in the next letter. But I was quite sure this had nothing to do with a deeply
held respect for my person, but rather a clever response to the information
that their "victim" recently had lost a son. These scammers really
are a bunch of creepy characters.

The pictures of Tom and Juliet Bin (well, pictures of some young africans
anyway. ) promptly arrived. I noted the difference between the two pictures.
Could the Tom picture be of the real scammer? Hmm.

Charles Tucker to Tom Bin
Dear Tom and Juliet,
I am so honoured and happy, and I am not ashamed to tell you that I cried a
little when I read your compassionate letter.
Have you read about the power outage in Canada and USA? As a result of that
my phone is out of order, and I just got my computer back on the net. Can I
perhaps just send my banking details to you? But no, I should not bother you
with this. I am sure Mr. Mulai can wait. You and Juliet look like two fine young
persons. Have you been in the army Tom? My son was with the US 101st Airborne,
but perhaps I have told you that? I am sorry if I bother you with to many words.
Please forgive an old man his ramblings. It would be so nice to have a photo
of you two holding a sign with Daddy Charles on it. Ore one of you I do not
know, but this is of course silly of me. I do not know what to think. Do you
really want to be adopted by me? But enough of this. You are obviously a bright
and forward looking young man and I must not bother you with sentimental drivel.
I have one account for the money I got when selling my company, one for money
transfer to other countries and one savings account. Do I perhaps need a new
account for this or can I use one of my existing accounts? What do you think
Tom? I have
never been a father to a girl before. How is Juliet? Please advise me on how
to be a father for a girl. Perhaps I could travel down to you? We could sort
thing out and then we all could get on a plane to Canada? But I am sure you
know best. Just advise me and I will follow your lead. It sure would be nice
with a picture of you holding some sort of greeting to me, especially you Tom.
I miss my son so. I am sorry. I must not bother you with this.
Take care and please contact me soon.
My God be with you.
With my love
Daddy
At this point I thought it would be interesting to introduce some competing scammers. What would happen? How would they (or he) react?
Charles Tucker to Tom Bin
Dear Tom,
Sorry to bother you again. I am writing to many mails to you, and I am sure
you have enough on your plate just now. But I just had to write, because I would
not do anything without your advice.
Did you say that your only representative in this matter was your bank manager?
I got two e-mails just now stating that a Mr. Daniel is your legal representative?
I enclose his letter here:

-------------------------------------
What shall I do Tom? My phone is still out of order, but shall I answer these
letters? Is something wrong? I am sorry if I sound a bit flustered, but my son
always was a pillar of support to me in difficult or confusing situations. And
now he is gone. I was at the airport when he and the other dead soldiers returned
to American soil. I wanted to take him with me to Ontario and my little town
of Madoc, but alas my former wife would not allow that. Oh Tom. I miss him so!
It is a great comfort to me knowing that you and Juliet are so kind and comforting
to me. But now I am rambling again. Please forgive me. I shall be strong and
help you and Juliet. Please advise me and I will do everything you tell me to.
With love

Normally you would not expect a "Apex director..blah,blah" from a bank to use an e-mail address from Sacbee. But then no real Bank director would ever write you a letter like this or send you a form like the one below.
I filled in the
form with bogus information, saved it all as a picture and sent it to "Tom
Bin"
for him to deliver it to the bank.
Charles Tucker to Mr. Mulai
Dear Sir,
I am pleased to inform you that I have faxed the form to you today, and will
like a confirmation that it is received.
I would also like to receive, by fax or e-mail your credentials Mr. Mulai. I
do not wish to be impolite but we are talking about a large sum of money and
the welfare of to young children. I have received two e-mails from one Mr. Daniels
and one Mr. Templar that cast some doubts on this whole matter, and I am worried
that someone tries to scam these two innocent children who destiny has left
unprotected in a harsh and unforgiving environment. I have reason to believe
that they are being under surveillance and perhaps even under guard. I have
unsuccessfully tried to reach them both by e-mail and phone this whole day and
I have, for the sake of their safety, asked for a photo of both or one of them
holding a placard with the words DADDY CHARLES on. No answer and no photo have
been received to this effect and I will not complete any thing before I get
this assurance that all is well! I await your urgent replay and considerations
on this matter. If I feel that the kids are in danger I will send an old friend
of mine down and get some information. He is a former RCMP and has also served
for many years in the Royal Canadian Commandoes before he set up his own security
business.
Sincerely Yours

My dear son and
daughter,
Are you ok? I could not face the loss of another child. Is this banker really
trustworthy or is he holding you ransom? I immediately called my bank and asked
them to not allow any movements on any of my accounts whatever the reason. Asked
them to treat this with the utmost discretion and just tell anyone who asked
that there had been some errors with the account numbers or that the customer
does not exists. Whatever it takes. I am so worried! I walk around in circles
and I must admit that I sometimes just sit down and cry. What is happening to
you? Are you there Tom and Juliet? Please respond! Give me some sign that all
is ok and that we can trust this bank director.
Please!

My dear children,
I must admit that
I knelt in prayer when I read your mail. Lord be praised!
Dearest Tom. Could I please ask a favour of you? I miss my son so, and I thank
the Lord for delivering another son. You sent me a nice picture of you and Juliet
and my heart sing in joy when I look upon it. But I wish so to have a picture
of you my son, holding a paper or a piece of cardboard with the text LOVE YOU
DADDY written in capital letters. I got such a picture from my son Kenneth just
after he arrived in Iraq and it is one of my dearest possessions. Please Tom,
indulge an old man in his wish and I will be your obedient servant and loving
dad for as long as I live.
I talked to my lawyer today and said I had made a new will and that all my money
and other possessions should go to a close relative of mine. I did not say anything
about you, since I understand the need to keep this confidential. And my lawyer
does not need to know anything further as his duty is just too counter sign
my new will. I leave everything to you and Juliet. Should anything happen to
me, the two of you will never lack anything in your lives ever.
Please Tom. Send me a photo of you holding a paper with the text LOVE YOU DADDY,
just as my dead son did. It would make me very happy. I can think of no other
thing just now. I know you must think I am a stupid old man, but please I miss
my dead son so and the thought of you are the only thing that makes my hearth
leap with joy. Put my soul and heart to rest and I will follow any command from
the banker. But now all my thoughts are just swirling around the image of my
dead son and the image of you my dearest new son Tom.

Dear Sir,
Thank you for your swift and considerate reply this morning.
The details you forwarded in your mail are satisfactory and I will comply in full. I am somewhat puzzled at your change of e-mail address, but since it is Sunday I suppose you are using your private address. I must say I am impressed that you are working also in the weekend and it reflects positively on your personal interest to help Tom and Juliet. As instructed I called your secretary at phone 234-8033023008 and he was very helpful. I suppose that everything is ready for the full transaction Monday morning, and will call my bank accordingly. He also gave me the address of your representative here in Canada and I will fly to Toronto this afternoon and meet with her to finalize everything. This mail is just to receive confirmation that my compliance with the instructions I received this morning by mail and in telephone conversation with your secretary has been noted and that every thing is according to schedule. If there are any instructions I should take with me to your Canadian representative in Toronto, please send it to me before 1730 hour, as I then will leave for the airport.
I am still a bit troubled by the fact that Tom is not willing to send me a photo of him holding a sign, and I hope all is well.

Dear Mr. Mulai
As you perhaps understand, someone has been trying to scam me. They have been using information regarding Tom and Juliet. I have ordered my bank to make no transactions without my consent, and I have ordered my lawyer to await further orders before counter-signing my new will giving my fortune and other possessions to Tom and Juliet Bin. I have asked the Lord for guidance, but remain in the dark and have to take my own precautions. I hesitate to think that Tom and Juliet are criminals, or that you are working for evil forces. And so the show could have gone on and on and on and..., but I think this little
amusment has been a good enough illustration of the Nigerian Scammers and the
new sport of counter-scamming. The more time they waste on counter-scammers,
the less time they have for scamming real victims. But I must admit it was unsatisfactory
not get a photo of the scammers holding a placard with some silly text on it.
But you can`t win`em all I suppose. And so I sent the final letter with my signature
attached.

And so ends my adventure with the Nigerian Scammers. I turned my computer of and poured myself a large Scotch. Outside the rain increased its fury and the wind howled like a banshee. A sinister omen or a sign of new adventures to come? The phone rang and I picked it up. A male voice talking pidgin english greeted me. "Hi how are you? I am Mr. Brown and calling from Amsterdam. I am a partner of Dr. Eze John"
I chuckled silently and made myself comfortable in the chair.
